Detailed Feature Comparison

Harness Cloud Cost Management Vs. CloudHeath

Time Granularity:

CloudHealth currently only offers daily granularity. For many customers, and especially engineering teams, that simply isn’t enough. Many things can go wrong in 24 hours and it’s imperative to have a more granular view into cloud costs. That’s why Harness Cloud Cost Management offers hourly granularity; it’s an almost-real-time view into possible issues that could end up very costly.

Tag Management Required:

Without great tag hygiene, it’s difficult to get the full value out of CloudHealth. They provide ways to automate tag governance, but the tool still relies heavily on customers creating, applying, and maintaining good tagging policies to get granular visibility. In addition, applied tags only exist in CloudHealth and do not propagate to your cloud provider. Harness minimizes the pain of tagging, providing visibility into application, service, environment, namespace, and workload.

CloudHealth requires good tagging to provide visibility, making the value of the tool dependent on customers’ ability to create, apply, and maintain good tagging policies. Harness provides this visibility without requiring tagging.

Root Cost Analysis (3 Metrics):

While CloudHealth provides visibility into Kubernetes costs, they do not provide analysis to help customers break out their utilized, idle, and unallocated costs within Kubernetes. Because these are crucial to understand resource efficiency in Kubernetes, Harness surfaces this information out of the box.

Cloud Event Correlation:

To correlate feature releases or engineering deployments with changes in cloud costs, a cloud cost management tool needs to have context behind an organization’s Continuous Delivery pipelines. CloudHealth is a standalone tool that has no way of getting this context, whereas Harness ties right into a customer’s pipelines to make the correlation between deployments and cost changes.

Cost Recommendations:

Harness focuses on providing cost optimization recommendations for Kubernetes workloads. This allows customers to simply use existing resources in more efficient ways – no need to validate purchase, downsizing, and rightsizing recommendations that change the composition of the infrastructure. This validation is required with CloudHealth recommendations, which also does not surface opportunities for cost efficiency in Kubernetes, limiting itself to the cloud providers.

Anomaly Detection:

Harness provides the ability for customers to automatically flag and drill down to any anomalous cost spikes, avoiding end-of-month surprises. Leveraging machine learning that customizes itself to a customer’s environment, including seasonality, customers are able to proactively detect and resolve cost spikes. With CloudHealth, customers need to manually identify anomalous costs, increasing the risk of undiscovered cost spikes that can snowball into large bills by the end of the month.

Key Takeaways:

CloudHealth provides a great set of visibility, savings, and forecast tools for cloud providers. However, they fall short in providing deep support for Kubernetes, which is where the world is headed. There is also an inordinate amount of tagging required, which puts the onus on your teams to engage in maintaining proper tag hygiene. Why not go a simpler route – one that doesn’t require tagging for Kubernetes visibility?

If you’re looking for tag-free and rich visibility, savings, and forecasting for Kubernetes, Harness Cloud Cost Management is the clear winner. Harness understands the pressure good tag hygiene puts on engineering teams, and the hurdles that introduces to creating good cost visibility in Kubernetes. We offer a less effort-intensive solution, providing you with the visibility you need – immediately.

We find there is need to be able to drill down more into cost of individual resources instead of just at the account level.

What I like best: Really useful to manage the instances that add operational costs; What I dislike: Reporting is not that great. Customizable reports is something Cloudhealth needs to improve.
